Propose in Prague with a ring made for her

Updated 17 October 2026. By Alexey Kovernikov, owner of Kove Jewelry in Prague.

A lot of people who propose in Prague are not from Prague. They come for a long weekend, they have the place and the hour worked out, and the ring is the one thing still waiting for a courier. There is a simpler way: order the ring before you travel, and collect it here, in person, a day or two before you propose.

Why collecting in Prague is easier than having it shipped

  • Nothing to intercept. No parcel arriving at a shared address, no delivery notice for someone else to open, no signature needed while you are at work. For a surprise, this matters more than anything else on this page.
  • You see it before it is hers. You hold the ring, check the stone against its IGI or GIA report and see the hallmark yourself, a day before you need it — not at the door, in a hurry.
  • No courier and no customs at your door. If you live outside the EU, a shipped ring is cleared by the carrier at home; carried in your hand luggage, it is declared by you on arrival instead (see below).
  • One less thing to wait for. No tracking number to watch while the trip comes closer.

How it works, step by step

  1. 1. About three weeks before your trip: tell us your dates.

Write on WhatsApp or to info@kove.jewelry: the design you like (or the shape and budget you have in mind), her ring size if you have it, and the days you will be in Prague.

  2. 2. We agree the date — and promise it.

We agree with you the day the ring will be handed over and promise it will be ready by then. For a hand-over in Prague a ring is usually ready in two to three weeks; if the design or the stone you want needs longer, we tell you before you order and suggest what fits your dates.

  3. 3. You order, choose the stone and pay.

You configure the ring on the site and choose the actual certified centre stone, lab-grown or natural. You pay for the ring in full when you order, as with every Kove ring — in Prague you only collect it. We confirm the full specification in writing before production starts, and you have 48 hours after that confirmation to change anything. See the rings.

  4. 4. In Prague: we hand it over in person.

We have no showroom, so we agree the place with you — a café, a quiet spot in the centre, or we bring the ring to your hotel. You get the ring, its box, the stone’s IGI or GIA report and the documents for the order. Take your time: check the girdle inscription against the report, look at the hallmark (585 or 750), and ask anything you want.

  5. 5. Then you propose.

If you have not chosen the place yet, here are nine places in Prague and the hour to go to each.

If your own travel dates change, tell us as soon as you know — we move the hand-over to a day you are in Prague, or ship the ring to you instead.

A two- or three-day plan

Not a package — just the order that works best. You book your own travel; we make the ring and meet you to hand it over.

  1. Day 1 — arrive and collect the ring.

Arrive, check in, and meet us at the time and place we agreed — at your hotel if that is easiest. Check the ring, the report and the hallmark, then put the box somewhere only you will look. In the evening, walk the place you have chosen at the same hour you plan to propose: you will see the light, the crowd and where to stand.

  2. Day 2 — propose.

Go early. Sunrise at Vyšehrad or on Charles Bridge before seven is a different city from the one at noon. Have a photographer twenty metres away if you want pictures, an indoor second choice if the weather turns, and a table booked for afterwards — the half hour after is the part people remember.

  3. Day 3 (optional) — Prague together.

A slow day for the two of you: Malá Strana, Kampa, a boat on the Vltava. If you claim tax free and fly home from Prague, leave time at the airport for the customs kiosk before check-in.

Nine places to propose in Prague, and when to go

Her ring size

This is the one detail worth getting right before you order, because a ring made in the wrong size cannot be fixed on the same trip. If you cannot ask her, borrow a ring she wears on the same hand and measure it — the guide below shows how to do it without her noticing.

If the size turns out wrong after the proposal, the first resize is free within 60 days of delivery for most designs. Write to us first: we confirm what the design allows. You cover the shipping to us; we cover the insured return within the EU — if you live outside the EU, ask us before you send it.

How to find her ring size without her knowing

Visiting from outside the EU: tax free

Prices on our site include Czech VAT of 21 %. If you live outside the European Union — the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Norway, Switzerland and so on — and you take the ring out of the EU yourself, you can claim that VAT back under the Czech tax-free scheme.

  1. Tell us when you order that you want tax free. We will need your passport details for the sales document.
  2. The purchase must be above CZK 2,000 including VAT on one sales document — any engagement ring is.
  3. When we hand the ring over in Prague, we issue the tax-free sales document. Since April 2026 it is electronic: the Czech Customs Administration receives it directly.
  4. The ring must leave the EU with you by the end of the third month after the month you collect it. Keep it in your hand luggage — customs may ask to see it.
  5. At the last EU airport you fly from, confirm the export with customs. At Václav Havel Airport Prague this is done at the self-service customs kiosks in the Terminal 1 departure hall; at another EU airport, ask customs there before check-in.
  6. Once the export is confirmed, the VAT is refunded to you. Claim it by the end of the sixth month after the purchase.

Tax free is for visitors who live outside the EU. If you live in an EU country — Czechia, Slovakia, Germany, Austria and so on — the ring is priced with VAT as usual.

Taking the ring home: customs where you live

Within the EU there is nothing to declare — you simply take the ring home. Outside the EU, an engagement ring is almost always above the duty-free allowance for returning travellers, so you will usually need to declare it on arrival. Keep the sales document and the stone report with the ring. Allowances for adults returning from abroad, as published by each authority:

  • United States: USD 800 per person; declare everything on the customs declaration. Source
  • United Kingdom (Great Britain): GBP 390; above it, duty and VAT are charged on the whole value, not only the excess. Source
  • Canada: CAD 800 after more than 48 hours abroad. Source
  • Australia: AUD 900; jewellery counts as general goods. Source

Rules change; check your own customs authority before you travel. Declaring the ring is simple and cheap compared with the risk of it being seized.

Carrying it

  • If you fly: hand luggage only — never in a checked bag. At security, put the box inside your bag rather than loose in a tray, and keep your eyes on it.
  • On the day, the ring goes in your pocket, not in a bag. Bags get put down and handed to other people.

Questions people ask

Can I buy an engagement ring in advance and collect it in person in Prague?

Yes. Kove rings are made to order: you write to us with your dates about three weeks before the trip, we agree the hand-over date and promise the ring will be ready by then. You order and pay as for any Kove ring, and collect it in person in Prague at a place we agree — it can be your hotel.

When do I pay?

In full when you order, as with every Kove ring. In Prague you only collect the ring — there is nothing to pay at the hand-over.

How far in advance should I order?

About three weeks before you arrive, and earlier if you can. Write to us with your dates first: we agree the hand-over date with you and promise the ring will be ready by then.

Where do I collect the ring? Do you have a shop?

We have no showroom. We agree the place with you on WhatsApp or by email — a café, a quiet spot in the centre, or we bring the ring to your hotel.

Can I get the VAT back as a tourist?

If you live outside the EU and take the ring out of the EU yourself, yes — under the Czech tax-free scheme. Tell us when you order; we issue the tax-free document when we hand the ring over, you confirm the export with customs at the last EU airport, and the 21 % Czech VAT is refunded.

What if I do not know her ring size?

Measure a ring she already wears on the same hand — our size guide shows how to do it without her noticing. If the size is wrong after the proposal, the first resize is free within 60 days of delivery for most designs; write to us first.

What if my travel dates change?

Tell us as soon as you know. We move the hand-over to a day you are in Prague, or ship the ring to you instead — free and insured.

Can I still have it shipped instead?

Of course. Delivery is free and insured to the countries we ship to; in that case the usual timing applies — made to order in up to 21 business days, often sooner, plus the transit time.
