How to Find Her Ring Size Without Her Knowing

Planning a surprise proposal? Six discreet, proven ways to find her ring size in secret — borrowing a ring, an impression, enlisting an ally — plus what to do when you simply cannot find out.

You have found the person you want to spend your life with — now you need one small, secret number: her ring size. The challenge is getting it without spoiling the surprise. Below are six discreet methods jewellers actually recommend, ranked from most to least reliable, plus a calm plan for when you genuinely cannot find out. And because every Kove ring is made to order, a near-miss is not a disaster — we explain that at the end.

Method 1: Borrow a Ring She Already Wears (most reliable)

The single best method. Quietly take a ring she already wears on her ring finger — the fourth finger — when she is not wearing it (the bedside table, jewellery box, or the dish by the sink). Bring it to us, or measure its inside diameter in millimetres; that number maps straight to her EU size (for example, 17.2 mm is about EU 54). Note which finger and hand it came from: a ring from the right ring finger is usually within half a size of the left. Slip it back before she notices. If you can photograph it next to a ruler, even better.

Method 2: Trace It or Take an Impression

If you can only borrow the ring for a moment, capture it rather than keep it. Place it on paper and trace the inside circle as precisely as you can with a fine pen, and we read the diameter from that. Or press the ring halfway into a bar of soap, a piece of soft modelling clay, or play-dough to leave a clean impression of its inner wall. Photograph the trace or impression next to a ruler and you have a record you can act on at leisure — without the ring ever leaving the house for long.

Method 3: Use Your Own Finger as a Gauge

When you cannot keep or copy the ring, borrow it for sixty seconds and slide it onto one of your own fingers. Push it until it stops and mark that exact spot with a pen. Bring your marked finger (or note the position) to us and we translate it into her size. It is less precise than measuring the ring directly, but it is a reliable backup when time is short — most men find her ring stops somewhere around the first knuckle of their pinky or ring finger.

Method 4: Enlist an Ally

Her mother, sister, or closest friend is often your best secret weapon. They may already know her size, or can find out naturally — trying on rings together, peeking in her jewellery box, or simply asking under the cover of "planning a gift." Pick someone who can keep a secret and who sees her often. This is the most reliable method that does not risk her noticing a missing ring, and it doubles as a quiet way to gauge her style preferences.

Method 5: The Casual Try-On or a Gift Ring

Make ring sizing part of everyday life. Browse a shop together "just for fun" and let her try a few on while you note the size, or play a game of trying on inexpensive costume rings at home and ask which she loves. Even better: give her a non-engagement ring (a fashion or right-hand ring) as a gift beforehand — you will learn her size and her taste, and she will never connect it to a proposal.

Method 6: Measure While She Sleeps (use with caution)

The classic film trick — wrapping a strip of paper or dental floss around her finger while she sleeps — does work, but it is the riskiest method and we list it last for a reason. Deep sleep is unpredictable; a cold touch or slight pressure can wake her, and a half-asleep "what are you doing?" is a hard moment to explain. If you try it, use soft floss, mark the overlap with a pen rather than pulling tight, and measure the length later. Only attempt it if she sleeps soundly.

When You Simply Cannot Find Out: Sizing Blind

Sometimes none of the above is possible — and that is fine. The most common women’s ring size is around EU 52–54 (US 6), so it is the safest single guess. Adjust from there using her build: petite or slim fingers tend toward EU 49–51, taller or fuller hands toward EU 55–57. If she wears rings loosely she may prefer a touch larger; if they leave marks, a touch smaller. A sensible blind estimate, plus our resizing safety net below, lets you propose without ever tipping her off.

Relax — Every Kove Ring Is Made to Order

Here is the reassurance that takes the pressure off: we do not sell from a fixed-stock tray. Every Kove ring is crafted for you after you order, so you choose the size at checkout, and for resizable gold designs we can adjust the fit after the proposal — typically within a couple of sizes, arranged case by case. That means a near-miss is easily fixed, and you can propose with the ring in hand. Get as close as you comfortably can in secret; we will take care of the perfect final fit together.

Propose With Confidence

If you can, borrow a ring she wears on the right finger — it is the most accurate route. If not, enlist an ally or learn her size through a casual gift ring. And if all else fails, order around EU 52–54 and lean on our made-to-order resizing. The size is a detail we can perfect later; the moment is what matters.
